Journal Critique Assignment Instructions
For each Journal Critique, you will evaluate and critique 1 research article from a professional journal. The journal can be from any discipline that details the current trends in special education leadership. You are highly encouraged to select articles that will help you complete your Journal Analysis Paper. All articles must be current (published within the last 5 years). The assignment must be in current APA format and must include a title page and a reference page; it must also be 225–250 words. The title page, in-text citations, and reference page are NOT included in the word limit.
Journal Critiques consist of 3 parts (each part must be only 1 paragraph): Part 1 – Summary Paragraph, Part 2 – Analysis of Author’s Key Points, and Part 3 – Personal Response. Personal pronouns are appropriate only in the Part 3 – Personal Response section of the Journal Critique.
When composing your reviews, remember to use professional, graduate-level writing. Do not begin with “This article is about…” Instead, open the review with a strong thesis statement and summarize the author’s main points in the first paragraph. Using third person, state your personal reaction to the article in the final paragraph (“This author agrees/disagrees…” or “one can see that…”).
How would you describe the impact of Capote’s techniques of switching between descriptions of the perpetrators, the descriptions of the victims, and the descriptions of the town and townspeople? Do the contrasts affect your response to the novel or interpretation of the novel? It was a real murder of a family: does it matter what the town and townspeople were like? Be sure to include examples of what you mean and include the in-text (parenthetical) citations.

M2D1: The Effects of Environmental Trends on Healthcare Organizations
One of the greatest challenges for healthcare organizations is identifying the changes that are most likely to occur and then planning for the future. Change occurs in the following areas: legislative/political, economic, social/demographic, technological, and competitive. Often we learn from the experiences of other organizations through mechanisms such as competitor analyses and case analyses.
An active discussion is the key to an interesting and engaging online course. Discussion in this course is designed to simulate a classroom discussion. As others join in the discussion, you should read what has already been posted and continue with the discussion from there. We will go through the questions one at a time, moving on to the next question once we have fully explored the current question. I will guide you through the discussions.
The modules in this course are one week in length. Time goes quickly, so remember to post early! Get in the habit of checking the discussions as often as you can to see what others have posted and to respond. The earlier in the week that you begin posting, the deeper the conversation and learning will be.
The first question is based on your own experience so that you can begin the discussion immediately without having completed all the assigned readings. You must apply your assigned readings to subsequent questions.
Let’s start with a reflective question based on your experiences, prior learning, and/or opinion.
Now applying what you have learned from the readings, let’s go through the rest of the discussion together, one question at a time. I will guide us through.
Case studies are a powerful learning modality. You will be assigned case studies to critically analyze throughout the course. For the remainder of this discussion, we will focus on how we can leverage case analyses for effective strategic planning. Be sure that you have carefully reviewed your Swayne et al Resource 1 reading in particular.
This last discussion question should be completed in a separate post.
Consult the Discussion Posting Guide for information about writing your discussion posts. Be sure to check your work and correct any spelling or grammatical errors before you post it. When you are ready to post, click on the “Reply” button for a new thread or “Reply” beneath an existing post to respond to the post. Then, copy/paste the text from your document into the message field, and click “Post Reply.”

Scenario
Analyze ethical and legal implications of cases involving bioethics. Two examples of highly publicized cases are listed below.
The national discussion concerning decision making for incompetent patients began with the 1976 case of Karen Ann Quinlan. Because she had been left in a persistent vegetative state after two periods of anoxia, her parents sought court authorization to remove her from a ventilator. The New Jersey Supreme Court, in a landmark, unanimous decision, authorized the removal on the basis of Quinlan’s constitutional right of privacy, which the court concluded would be lost unless her parents were given authority to exercise it on her behalf. In the 15 years since Quinlan, courts in almost 20 states have reviewed disputes regarding treatment for incompetent patients. Courts in all these states have recognized the general right of competent people to refuse treatment, and in all but two states have also ultimately found that the U.S. Constitution, state constitution, or common law permits a surrogate to make treatment decisions on behalf of an incompetent person (Annas, 1990).
The case of Nancy Cruzan is essentially identical to that of Karen Ann Quinlan, with one exception: Nancy Cruzan, a young woman in a persistent vegetative state as a result of a 1983 automobile accident, requires only tube feeding (rather than a ventilator and tube feeding) to continue to survive. Her parents firmly believe she would not want to have tube feeding continued under such circumstances, in part on the basis of her own statement that she would not want to continue to live if she could not be “at least halfway normal.” For this reason, a trial judge authorized her parents to have their daughter’s tube feeding discontinued (Annas, 1990).
