Ecosystem Near You

To facilitate you pulling all the concepts of this course together and in lieu of a midterm exam you will create a systems diagram of an ecosystem of your choice accompanied by a written narrative describing the system in detail.   To go about this assignment:

a.  select an ecological system… agricultural fields… wetlands.. local parks… your favorite area to hike… family farm/ranch… any ecological system you can visit.. take pictures on your visit.

b.  make a list of detailed list biotic and abiotic components in that system.

c.  make a list of interactions among those biotic and abiotic components

d.  make a list of controls of the interactions between the biotic and abiotic components

e.  draw a diagram of the system… components connected by interactions and controls. (see examples below)

f. write a narrative explaining the systems diagram… including a section on what might happen in the system if there were a disturbance such as fire or invasive species.

It is critical that you include many of the concepts conveyed in the first 4 weeks of this course… use the correct terminology.   Matter of fact, I highly recommend you go through each week and note how all the concepts relate to your selected ecosystem.

This assignment will be graded on how thoroughly and accurately you’ve covered your ecosystem in relation to the concepts we’ve covered.

Your final project should include:

  • systems diagram (See attachments – example 2,3,4)
  • written narrative describing the systems diagram IN DETAIL, and in this written narrative pictures you took on your visit to the site should be referenced and included as inline pictures (placed within the narrative) or an appendix of pictures.

Note this is NOT an artistic exercise.  Do not draw a picture, but rather a diagram of a systems components and call out interactions and controls.  Think about the water and nutrient cycles – think about individual species biology, population ecology and community ecology, then think about disturbance in your system.  You are not expected to cover everything in your system, but it is expected that your submission reflect that you spent time thinking about your system.

Skeletal Sorting Assignment

include some kind of comparison to other vertebrates. Incorporate some aspect of the skeleton for comparison.  How does FORM relate to FUNCTION? This can be related to the skull/teeth (e.g., diet), limbs (locomotion), etc. This is where the person with the skeleton will come into play for the write-up.

Interview Project Directions

Interview Project Directions

Interview/Exercise Plan: 200 points. Conduct an interview of an older adult over the age of 65 and write an analysis of this interview. Write an Exercise Prescription for this individual which addresses the five categories of fitness. Include a PAR-Q and health stratification questionnaire. Incorporate fitness testing assessments and prescription practices discussed in class.  Be as thorough as possible when describing the recommended exercise prescription. Write a brief analysis of why the exercises were selected, special considerations and barriers this client may face.

Components of Project:

Section 1: Data Collection

Step 1: Choose someone you feel comfortable speaking to who is over the age of 65 and request an interview with them. They must agree to the interview. Make sure to have them sign the consent form (on the interview question sheet), a PAR-Q and a health risk screening form. If you are conducting the interview over the phone ask for their verbal consent (they don’t need the sign the physical document). You will turn in digital copies of these forms.

Using the questions provided find out about them and their physical activity habits. Ask any additional follow up questions your think may be necessary based on the answers they provided.

Step 2: Write a brief summary of your interview findings. This should be about one paragraph that reflects over what you learned about this client and what information you will need to consider when making their exercise prescription.

Section 2: Exercise Prescription

Step 1: Based on the information gathered in the interview, information presented in class and your knowledge from previous kinesiology course work and come up with an assessment plan and exercise plan that you would recommend to this person if they were your client. You are not required to show the interviewee this program or implement it in any way it is purely hypothetical.

**Please note, as shown on the rubric make sure your assessment and exercise plan contains all necessary components

  1. Select      appropriate assessments for your client based on their current health      status. You must select at least 3 at the minimum. Make sure to describe      the assessments in depth including directions and how results are measured
  2. Select a      cardiovascular program appropriate for your client. Use the FITT acronym      in your recommendation. Include how you would progress this program.
  3. Select      resistance training program, make an educated guess on what weight/ reps/      sets you would place this client at. Include how you would progress this      program.
  4. Select at least      2 balance and 4 flexibility exercises. Include how you would progress this      program.
  5. Organize all of      this information into a chart or easy to follow table that includes all      necessary components including exercise descriptions and progressions.      Create a sample day and week workout plan including warm-up and cool down      exercises.

Section 3: Analysis

Write a brief summary that explains the decision-making process behind your exercise plan. This section should explain why the exercise and assessment choices were made based on your interviewee’s health status and physical activity level. Be sure to explain any special considerations or contraindications that applied to this specific individual.

Make sure this section any barriers they may face, how you would motivate them and what goals you would set for them.

For this project you will turn in:

1. A copy of your interview transcript/Qs & As

2. Your interview summary

3. All forms (Par-Q and health risk stratification form)

4. A copy of your assessment plan and workout plan for your interviewee (all details included)

5. Your analysis summary about the exercise prescription that you wrote

Discussion Board

Part I: Introduce yourself to your classmates with your name, location, current employment, and future goals.

Part II: Briefly describe a time that you (if not you, then someone you know) were in a situation where you were not classified as an employee but as an independent contractor, temporary worker, or some other type of contingent worker. How was the relationship between the organization and the worker different from an employer-employee relationship? What were the pros and cons for you as a worker? Hypothesize your answer if you do not have first-hand knowledge of a scenario described.

Social Work Term Paper

Students will write a 7 page paper that addresses a specific issue in social work. You must include at least 7 peer-reviewed journal articles in your paper. You must include recent research – published in the last 15 years (2005-2020).  You may include one older source (prior to 2005), but it should be in addition to the 7 required peer-reviewed journal articles. For statistics, you should you use only government websites (i.e. .gov). You should not include information from any other websites, as many are not scholarly in nature.

The topic I choose is: immigration and how it pertains to social work. I believe that now more than ever, social workers are trained to be culturally competent to work with families of diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds. However, despite this increase in education, it can be noted that immigrant families still struggle immensely while navigating through the social welfare system. In my paper I will discuss the diverse struggles immigrants are faced with, such as: lack of resources, having limited education, legal status, biases they face, not being able to understand the language or the culture, etc. Furthermore, I will also discuss how having culturally competent professionals can help alleviate these issues and provide better support to this vulnerable population. Lastly, I will dive into best practices that social workers and other helping professionals can take into consideration to be better advocates for immigrant families in the social welfare system.

Paper structure should be:

Introduction/Description of the Issue (Literature Review) (2-3 pages):

-Why is this topic important?

– What is the issue’s impact on the subjects?

– What is the impact on society?

– Explain the history of this issue and how it came about.

– Give current trends, facts, data, and research to describe the current status of your topic.

– What have been the barriers to addressing the problem?

– Incorporate at least four peer reviewed journal articles.I

Advocacy Efforts (2 pages)

-What advocacy efforts have been attempted to address this so far (i.e. legislation, research, public education on the matter, other types of advocacy?

– Who are the lead advocates on this matter (are they specific individuals, perhaps politicians, researchers, activists, or are they agencies such as watchdog organizations, universities, etc.?)

-Who are the targets of these advocates?

– How have the targets responded to the advocacy?

– What were the outcomes of advocacy efforts?

– How would you address these obstacles?

–  What methods would you use?

– Who would you align yourself with?

– What are reasonable outcomes you would expect to see to know that you’ve been successful?

-Use data, research, case examples from literature to illustrate (at least 4 peer reviewed journal articles)

Your Advocacy Project/Campaign (2 pages)

– Design an advocacy project/campaign to address the aforementioned issue based on the knowledge you have obtained, particularly regarding what seems to be working, what obstacles have been faced, and who the supporters are.

-Identify where your project/campaign might be based (organizations, workplaces, communities, government agencies) and outline how you would proceed.

-Describe your rationale, goals, strategies, targets, collaborators, and expected implementation process.  What would your project/campaign look like?

-Address how you would deal with obstacles and build essential support.

Conclusion/Relation to Advocacy Theory (1 page)

-How does the information you found about this topic relate to concepts learned in your other courses?  Be specific!!

-This is your chance to synthesize all of your research with the information you have learned in your  courses and “make it all come together.”
