Each student will be asked to create and explain their own discontinuous (stage) theory of lifespan development. Each theory must have at least 5 stages that are distinct, separate milestones of development. The student’s theory can cover broad concepts of development or focus on one topic/area of development across the lifespan. In a Word document (uploaded to D2L), students are asked to outline their theory addressing each of the following:

1. What is the overall topic/concept of your developmental theory? For example, Freud’s theory addressed psychosexual development, Kohlberg addressed moral development. What does your theory address?

2. Who does your theory apply to? Is it to everyone, or to a specific group of people, specific culture, gender, ethnicity, geographic location, etc.?

3. What are the specific stages of your theory? What are the age ranges and the unique milestones a person will meet within each stage? Remember, stage theories argue that each stage is distinct from all of the others. What makes each of your stages distinct?

4. How will a person meet each milestone? For example, according to Erikson, people face psychosocial conflicts they have to address, but Piaget said development naturally occurred and nothing ‘needed to be done.’ What does your theory propose?

Reflections must be in paragraph format, double-spaced, and at least 200 words. Students are not required to have outside references, but if they use outside sources, they must correctly cite and reference them. Reflections can be written in first-person, but they are expected to be formal written assignments. Points will be deducted for spelling errors, grammatical mistakes, disorganized or informal writing, structure, and flow. This Discussion assists in solidifying your understanding of statistical testing by engaging in some data analysis. This week you will work with a real, secondary dataset to construct a research question, estimate a multiple regression model, and interpret the results.

Whether in a scholarly or practitioner setting, good research and data analysis should have the benefit of peer feedback. For this Discussion, you will post your response to the hypothesis test, along with the results. Be sure and remember that the goal is to obtain constructive feedback to improve the research and its interpretation, so please view this as an opportunity to learn from one another.

To prepare for this Discussion:

• Review this week’s Learning Resources and media program related to multiple regression.
• Create a research question using the Afrobarometer Dataset or the HS Long Survey Dataset, that can be answered by multiple regression.

By Day 3

Use SPSS to answer the research question. Post your response to the following:

1. If you are using the Afrobarometer Dataset, report the mean of Q1 (Age). If you are using the HS Long Survey Dataset, report the mean of X1SES.
2. What is your research question?
3. What is the null hypothesis for your question?
4. What research design would align with this question?
5. What dependent variable was used and how is it measured?
6. What independent variables are used and how are they measured? What is the justification for including these predictor variables?
7. If you found significance, what is the strength of the effect?
8. Explain your results for a lay audience, explain what the answer to your research question.

For this meeting, I would like you to recall / think about what management accounting concepts have you learned that you can apply in your work place or your business or at home if you are a full time student. Part of the final requirement of this course is for you to present a situation where you have applied the concepts learned in this subject. I am announcing this requirement as early as now. You can use the concepts of our future remaining topic as well, that is – budgeting (chapter 9 of the ebook).

Applying the management accounting concepts introduced to you since the beginning of the course, I would like you to come up with the situation where you have applied (or can apply) the concepts you have gained in this course. Perhaps, you can present a computation / actual calculation of a break-even analysis of the company you are connected with, or compute the break-even of your business for those who are in business. You can also cite cases where you could apply concepts acquired in relevant costing or short-run decision making. If you are a fulltime student, give an actual situation where you have applied concepts of short-run decision making / cvp analysis. You can also present a financial statements analysis of your company where you are working or that of your business, what are the prospects of your company, strengths and weakness as well as the the opportunities and the threat?
