A paralegal’s role in conducting legal research, or in any situation where legal analysis is required, includes determining the potential weaknesses of a legal argument and the counterarguments that the other side may present.

Consider the following:

In California, Proposition 71, The California Stem Cell Research and Cures Initiative, was passed in November 2005 in response to federal funding limitations for this controversial research. This initiative, among other things, established a constitutional right to conduct stem cell research and appropriated $3 billion from the General Fund to pay for bonds to finance this initiative. Other states have initiated their own stem cell research projects as legislative support for this type of research has increased. However, great controversy still remains over the use of human embryonic cells for research purposes and also using government money, i.e. taxpayer dollars, to fund the research.

For this assignment, conduct research on both sides of this legal issue and decide which side of the legal issue you agree with. Then, prepare both an argument for your side of the issue and the counterarguments to the argument you presented. Be sure to include a conclusion as to why, given the presentation of the arguments and counterarguments, your position is favorable. Be sure to provide citations for the resources you include in your posts.

Your assignment should be 2-3 pages long. A good breakdown might be 1 page each for the argument and counterargument, then a half to 1 page conclusion. Submit your Assignment by Sunday, 11:59PM (Mountain Time).
