Arson investigator John Klottier is on the scene of a home that has burned to the ground. Before the insurance company can pay the claim, it would like a copy of his report. It is suspected that the owner may have burned his own home to collect the insurance. 

Investigator Klottier first looks for any criminal burn patterns. 

Individual Portion

  • Address the following in 400–600 words:
    • Provide detailed descriptions of the following burn patterns:
      • A plant (sometimes called a booster)
      • Trailers (sometimes called streamers)
      • Puddling
    • What is spoliation, and how could it affect crime scene investigations? Explain.
  • Be sure to reference all sources using APA style.

Group Portion

  • First come to a consensus on the descriptions of the 3 burn patterns from the Individual Portion as well as the explanation of spoliation.
  • Next, address the following as a group in 600–850 words:
    • How should Investigator Klottier investigate this fire? Explain.
    • Which type of accelerant was most likely used for the fire, and what burn patterns would it leave behind? Explain.
    • How would he handle the evidence? Explain.
    • What information would he collect from the family? Explain.
