The Span of Control has to do with number of employees or subordinates that has to report. For example in the military you have a first Sgt, and you have a company Commander which the Company Commander notify the first Sgt. of any duties that may take place for the daily duties.

The Chain of Command has to do with individuals getting the proper permission from the right person by going up the chain of Command. Its all about how you communicate and using your communication skill the most efficient way that shows a sign of professionalism to other and yourself.

When you have unity you have power that leads the way. A strong survival that will always out do the bad. Working together makes a difference, however everyone may not agree but one person can lead the way so that others may follow.

According to Cordner (2014), three key organizational principles are the chain of command, unity of command, and span of control. The chain of command is important because it establishes the lines of communication within a department. This allows for more effective decision making and establishes a clear flow of information from the most authoritative figure to the subordinates. The chain of command is divided into different management levels, such as the chief administrative level, the command level and the supervisory level. This gives each rank a specific role in the department, allowing for every necessary task to be completed in a timely manner and communication to be much more effective. The unity of command is a principle that establishes a one-to-one basis, where a subordinate is to report to only one superior. Without this principle, subordinates can easily be confused by the different instructions from multiple superior figures. This just creates a less chaotic and more understandable work environment. The span of control is the total number of subordinates that report to a superior figure. In other words, if a chief is in command of three captains, his or her span of control is three. By establishing this number ahead of time, again, there is less confusion. This span of control follows the rank of command, where the chief has the smallest span of control (119-123).
