In Unit 1, you learned about the development of policing in the United States. In the readings for Unit 2, you learned about several key reform periods that have taken place throughout the service with a specific focus on three specific eras (political, professional, and community-oriented).  

To help you understand these reform periods, you are going to explore the first national attempt to reform and improve policing and the delivery of services to communities. Following several high-profile corruption scandals, rising social tension, and riots, then President Johnson formed the President’s Task Force on Police. The final report, published in 1967, held considerable information on the state of policing, specific issues and challenges, and key recommendations.  

In this discussion, you will discuss the report, with a focus on the key issues and challenges facing police agencies at this time, how they came to exist, and what impeded many of those key recommendations from being implemented.  

The specific steps are as follows:

1. Read Task Force Report: The Police (1967). 
2. Write an initial post that identifies the 3 key issues and challenges that most resonated with you.  
3. Additionally, in this initial post, identify 1 recommendation that you believe was incredibly important. Explain your selection, and then research to see if this implementation was successful at a national level.  
4. Lastly, identify an issue, challenge, or recommendation that you believe was not overcome or implemented. Explain your selection.   
5. Reply to classmates explaining why you agree or disagree with their examples
